Surprising Triumph: Brian Harman Dominates Field at the 2023 Open Championship

Brian Harman has emerged as the Champion Golfer of the Year, capturing his first major victory at The Open Championship held at Royal Liverpool. The 36-year-old secured the title with an impressive score of -13.

Harman’s exceptional performance on Friday, where he shot six-under 65, propelled him into a commanding lead that he successfully maintained throughout the tournament. However, Saturday’s third round presented some challenges.

During the third round, Harman faced formidable competition in hometown hero Tommy Fleetwood. Starting the round with a five-stroke lead, Harman soon saw his advantage dwindle to just two strokes, as Fleetwood capitalized on his home-field advantage.

However, Harman displayed exceptional composure under pressure, finishing the round with a four-under score on his final 13 holes. Overall, his performance resulted in a tournament score of -12, securing him a comfortable five-stroke victory.

Despite the gray skies and rain on Sunday, Harman maintained his lead, never allowing it to shrink by more than four shots. In complete control of his destiny, Harman secured a six-stroke triumph.

Although several players achieved low scores during the final two rounds, none were able to catch up with Harman, solidifying his victory.

This victory marks Harman’s third win on the Tour and his first major title since the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship. His performances at the previous three majors this year were not as fruitful, with early exits at the Masters and PGA Championship, and a T43 finish at the U.S. Open.

In the previous year’s Open, Harman secured a T6 finish, adding to his record of top-10 finishes at major tournaments. Prior to the tournament, some sportsbooks had him at odds of 120–1. Now, his name will forever be etched on the coveted Claret Jug.

Playing on his home turf, Fleetwood had a share of the lead after the first round with an impressive -5 score. However, consecutive 71s in the following rounds resulted in him finishing at four-under, primarily due to a triple-bogey on the penultimate hole.

Rory McIlroy will continue to wait for his next major victory, as his drought reaches its tenth year. His last major win came in 2014 at the Open, also held at Royal Liverpool. McIlroy finished at T6 with a score of six-under, following his T7 and second-place finishes at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open, respectively. He failed to make the cut at the Masters.
