For history buffs, we have a special treat. Watch the Fox Nation special “To Rescue the Constitution” hosted by Bret Baier. This captivating program delves into the life of George Washington, one of the most influential Founders of the United States. Discover the untold story of the man who secured our nation’s future.

On September 15, 1787, something extraordinary happened at the Constitutional Convention. Edmund Randolph, George Mason, and Elbridge Gerry refused to sign the new Constitution without amendments. George Washington, the convention’s president, was deeply disappointed, especially by Mason’s defection. Their friendship suffered as a result.

Despite their disagreements, Washington and Madison decided to prioritize ratification. They believed that a bill of rights could be added later. This decision ignited a debate among the states, ultimately leading to the passage of a bill of rights. But for Washington, it was a bitter pill to swallow knowing that two prominent Virginians didn’t sign the Constitution they had worked so hard to create.

As time went on, Randolph came around, but Mason grew more critical of President Washington. He believed that the presidency was corrupted, similar to a monarchy. Their relationship never recovered, showcasing the long-standing tradition of passionate rebels in American politics.

Recently, we witnessed another example of rebels rocking the status quo. Eight Republicans, with the support of some Democrats, voted against Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, resulting in his ouster. This unprecedented event reminds us of the delicate balance that keeps our government functioning.

These events prompted me to reflect on my new book, “To Rescue the Constitution: George Washington and the Fragile American Experiment.” Throughout history, there have been moments when the entire nation teetered on the edge of disaster. Dissenters, both influential and small in number, have threatened the legacy of our Founding Fathers.

George Washington, a wise and revered leader, believed that partisanship was a danger to our unity. He warned against excess and a “spirit of mischief” born from partisanship. His farewell address, read aloud in the Senate every year on his birthday, urges us to prevent the destructive fire of partisanship from consuming our nation.

Today, we see signs of this danger surrounding us. As we choose a new speaker, we should set aside the mentality of partisan rebels and strive for unity, just as Washington would have advised.

Don’t miss out on more thought-provoking opinions from Bret Baier. He is the Chief Political Anchor of Fox News Channel and the author of five presidential biographies. His fifth biography, “To Rescue the Constitution: George Washington and the Fragile American Experiment,” will be available on October 10, 2023.
