Surprising Comeback: Walton Goggins Returns to the ‘Justified’ Universe

Warning: The following content contains major spoilers. In the thrilling finale of “Justified: City Primeval,” fans were treated to a shocking twist as antagonist Boyd Crowder made a surprising re-appearance. Played by Walton Goggins, Crowder, who had supposedly embraced religion, delivered a gospel message to fellow inmates in a Kentucky prison. In a daring escape, he broke free with the help of his lover, a prison guard, embarking on an adventurous journey to Mexico. Meanwhile, retired US Marshal Raylan Givens, played by Timothy Olyphant, relaxed on a boat in Miami with his daughter, unaware of the escape in Kentucky.

The finale of “Justified: City Primeval” was directed by writer, showrunner, and executive producer Michael Dinner, who revealed that the decision to bring back Boyd Crowder was intentional. Dinner and Dave Andron, who had previously worked on “Justified,” discussed the idea of bringing back Walton Goggins’ character. However, they were determined to only do so if it made sense in the context of the story. They didn’t want to simply bring back the original characters for the sake of it. Their goal was to propel Raylan Givens into a new narrative.

Dinner explained that they didn’t want to introduce Boyd Crowder halfway through the season. They wanted to address the elephant in the room and give closure to fans who had been wondering about his whereabouts. So, they made the decision to bring him back in the final moments of the series.

Before proceeding, Dinner made sure to discuss the plan with Timothy Olyphant, who enthusiastically agreed. Once Olyphant was on board, they sought approval from both Walton Goggins and FX. Goggins, after reading the rough draft of the scenes involving Boyd’s return, expressed his excitement and willingness to participate, despite his busy schedule.

However, their plans hit a roadblock when Illinois and Chicago denied their request to shoot in prisons due to staffing shortages caused by COVID. Undeterred, Dinner quickly adapted and remembered an empty prison location in Pittsburgh that he had previously used for another project. The Pittsburgh Film Office granted them permission to film there. Additionally, they were fortunate to secure permission to shoot on a bridge and road that would soon be demolished, mirroring the original “Justified” pilot.

The closing scenes of “Justified: City Primeval” left the door open for another season, sparking discussions about the possibility of continuing the story. While Dinner insists that their intention was not to reboot the series, but rather recreate the feeling they had while working on the show, the opportunity for further exploration excited them. Walton Goggins himself raised the idea of continuing the series, and Dinner revealed that discussions had taken place with FX before the SAG-AFTRA strike. Although there have been no recent talks, Dinner believes FX is pleased with the show’s viewership numbers. He remains hopeful that as long as everyone involved is enthusiastic and the new storyline doesn’t diminish the original ending, a third chapter of “Justified” could become a reality.
