Surgeon Fatally Shot in Tennessee Exam Room

In a tragic incident, a medical patient in Tennessee shot and killed his physician during an examination. The shooting took place inside a clinic in Collierville, near Memphis, where Dr. Benjamin Mauck was attending to 29-year-old Larry Pickens. Pickens used a handgun to shoot Dr. Mauck around 2:30 p.m. However, he was apprehended by the police within five minutes as he attempted to flee the scene. Pickens now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and described the incident as a targeted attack. Although there was an opportunity for Pickens to harm others at the facility, he refrained from doing so, leaving the authorities puzzled about the motive behind the attack. A witness revealed that Pickens had been making threats against Dr. Mauck in the week leading up to the shooting. However, the police were previously unaware of any such threats.

Further investigation is being conducted to determine if Pickens had any prior encounters with law enforcement agencies. Additionally, it was revealed that Dr. Mauck was an esteemed orthopedic surgeon specializing in elbow, hand, and wrist surgery. He had received a stellar 4.9 rating from his patients. The clinic where Dr. Mauck practiced requested privacy and prayers for his family, describing him as a highly respected and beloved physician.

Unfortunately, this shooting incident is not an isolated case. In May, another shooting occurred in an Atlanta medical facility, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to four others. The suspect in that case was reported to have mental health issues. Similarly, in 2022, a man armed with rifles killed four people in a Tulsa medical building, targeting his surgeon due to unresolved back pain after surgery.

In response to these incidents, Tennessee state Sen. Raumesh Akbari has called for stricter gun restrictions, including reinstating background checks and gun licenses. She emphasizes the need for common-sense reforms to ensure public safety.

It is important to address the alarming trend of violence against healthcare workers. These professionals dedicate their lives to serving others and should not have to fear for their safety while fulfilling their duty.
