Surgeon Fatally Shot by Patient in Exam Room

According to police, an orthopedic surgeon was fatally shot by a patient in an exam room at a Tennessee clinic on Tuesday. The victim, Dr. Benjamin Mauck, was a husband and father of two young children. The incident took place around 2pm at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Collierville, west of Memphis. The shooting was described by police as a targeted “one-on-one interaction.” The Collierville Police Chief, Dale Lane, expressed his shock and horror at a press conference. A video obtained by WREG shows the police response inside the clinic, with a witness reporting that a man with a pistol ran out of a room. The shooter was detained without incident within five minutes, according to NBC News.

The suspect, an unidentified male, had been at the clinic for several hours and was found outside with a gun “on his person.” The reasons for his presence at the clinic are unclear. However, a person at the scene informed WREG that the suspect had been threatening Dr. Mauck for at least a week. There was no prior knowledge of these alleged threats by the police. Dr. Mauck, who specialized in elbow, hand, and wrist surgery, held the position of director of the Congenital Hand Deformities Clinic at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. He was named one of the “2023 Top Doctors” in Memphis by Memphis Magazine just days before the incident. Patients at the clinic where he worked for almost 11 years gave him a rating of 4.9, according to NBC.

Clinic representative Irina Ollar expressed shock and heartbreak over the loss of Dr. Mauck, describing him as a highly respected and beloved physician. Dr. Trey Eubanks, interim president and surgeon-in-chief at Le Bonheur, also mourned the tragic loss of Dr. Mauck, calling him a dedicated physician and a beloved colleague. Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Raumesh Akbari, a Democrat, highlighted the need for common-sense measures like reinstating background checks and gun licenses, as well as establishing new reforms to protect against threats. This incident underscores the urgency of such reforms.
