June 20 (UPI) — Witnessed by a drone photographer, an extraordinary encounter took place on a California beach where an orphaned seal pup approached surfers and playfully climbed onto their boards.

Ed Hartel, a drone enthusiast, aimed to capture footage of a seal pup that had been spotted swimming near Tourmaline Surf Park in San Diego. Little did he know, he was about to witness a heartwarming spectacle.

Hartel found the pup comfortably mingling with the surfers, showcasing its playful nature as it hopped from board to board. According to Hartel, the seal pup would spend around five to ten minutes on each board before paddling off to another surfer.

Despite the pup’s adorable antics, the surfers made the conscious decision not to touch the seal, demonstrating their respect for wildlife. “None of the surfers are touching him, they’re very respectful, they’re letting him do his thing. It’s just quite odd it keeps jumping up on surfboards,” Hartel mentioned in an interview with KFMB-TV.

Visitors on the beach speculated that the seal pup had lost its mother, who was likely killed by a great white shark a few days earlier. To ensure the pup’s well-being, SeaWorld dispatched a crew to evaluate the animal after receiving reports from concerned surfers. Fortunately, the crew determined that the pup was in good health and did not require assistance.
