Supporters of the pro-life movement should rally behind a federal ban on abortions at 15 weeks.

The crowd’s response to Vice President Mike Pence at our recent conference can be described as tepid applause. Pence had just proposed a federal 15-week abortion ban, which didn’t sit well with the decidedly pro-life audience, or align with the desires of the pro-life movement. However, despite the mixed reactions, I believe Pence was correct. For the sake of both principles and practicality, it is crucial that we unite around a federal 15-week abortion ban.

As a devoted Catholic and supporter of the pro-life movement, I firmly believe in the need to end abortion. It is an injustice that harms both mothers and children, and it must be eradicated from our country as soon as possible.

However, there is a distinction between expressing this belief and actually achieving it. If we truly want to make progress, the pro-life movement must meet the American people where they currently stand, in order to lay the foundation for continued advancement.

Currently, we are at risk of losing the progress we have already made. Since the Supreme Court’s repeal of Roe v. Wade last year, numerous states have taken steps to protect mothers and children, with some even completely banning abortion. These laws have already saved the lives of tens of thousands of unborn children, giving them the opportunity for a future.

However, abortion advocates have launched a coordinated campaign to eliminate all restrictions on abortion through ballot measures, even in conservative states like Kansas and Kentucky. They hope to replicate this success in Ohio in the near future.

Abortion activists feel empowered to roll back pro-life protections because they can portray Republicans as extremists on the issue. It is a compelling accusation, given that Democrats support the termination of healthy unborn children up until birth, despite the availability of adoption opportunities. On the other hand, the lack of a clear consensus among Republicans on when abortion should be prohibited allows the left to create fear and claim that Republicans aim to ban all abortions everywhere. The pro-choice movement can propagate this narrative without acknowledging their own desire for unrestricted abortion access at all times and for any reason.

In the realm of politics, message discipline plays a vital role. Currently, Republicans lack a unified message, which provides Democrats with the opportunity to expand abortion rights beyond even the permissive era of Roe. However, if Republicans unite around a federal 15-week abortion ban, the pressure would shift. The national conversation could shift from Republicans being portrayed as banning abortion from the earliest stages of pregnancy to Democrats being associated with supporting abortion until the final day of pregnancy. This is a conversation that the left wants to avoid. As demonstrated by mainstream polling, a majority of Americans support a 15-week ban, and in a democratic society, the majority rules.

Only the pro-life movement has the ability to steer the GOP in this direction. Pro-life advocates are the core of the Republican Party, just as the pro-choice movement is integral to the Democratic Party. By rallying behind a federal 15-week ban, we can mobilize voters and lawmakers to implement this policy in the future.

This would mark a significant improvement compared to the current abortion landscape under Roe, while still allowing states that wish to go further to do so. Although a 15-week ban may not be perfect, it provides an opportunity for the pro-life movement to prepare for the larger battle that lies ahead.

Let’s protect as many mothers and children as possible today, so that we can intensify our efforts to change minds, win hearts, and transform the culture in the future.
