Bruce Collie has broken his silence following the tragic loss of his daughter, Devyn Reiley, in a plane crash during the AirVenture Oshkosh airshow. In an interview with WBAY.com, Collie expressed his family’s faith in Jesus Christ and their belief that Devyn is now with the Lord. He compared her absence to going on a trip to Mars, and emphasized the promise of reuniting with her through Jesus Christ and the resurrection.
Devyn, who was 30 years old and the eldest of Bruce Collie’s 13 children, had always been passionate about aviation. Bruce recalled precious memories of her flying airplanes at just 6 years old. Devyn became a certified pilot in 2017 and was piloting a World War II-era T-6 Texan with her co-pilot Zach Colliemoreno at the time of the accident.
The vintage aircraft reached an altitude of 3,900 feet before losing control and crashing into Lake Winnebago. Tragically, Devyn passed away shortly after celebrating her third wedding anniversary. The U.S. Coast Guard managed to recover the bodies of both pilots after an extensive search. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Despite the heartbreak, Bruce Collie expressed his pride in Devyn for living life on her own terms and pursuing her passion for aviation. He believes that the details of the accident are ultimately irrelevant and trusts that the National Transportation Safety Board will provide answers in due time.
In a separate incident on the same day, two other pilots lost their lives when a helicopter collided with a gyrocopter at the airshow. In memory of Devyn, Bruce Collie announced that a service will be held at the airport in San Marcos, Texas, on Saturday. Bruce, a former NFL player who won two Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers in 1989 and 1990, is determined to honor his daughter’s memory and celebrate her life.
