Super Bowl Champion Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Announces Exciting Retirement from Football

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is retiring from professional football.

The Quebec native, 32, announced his retirement on social media Thursday morning, expressing his serenity with the decision and his sense of accomplishment.

Duvernay-Tardif spent six NFL seasons playing for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2014 to 2019. He then played for the New York Jets in 2021 and 2022.

“It’s been 9 years since I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the NFL, and sometimes I still can’t believe I had the chance to experience this amazing journey,” he wrote in his heartfelt statement.

This offensive lineman was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the NFL draft in 2014 after playing college football at McGill University from 2010 to 2013.

The Mont-Saint-Hilaire native earned his medical degree from McGill in 2018.

He won Super Bowl 54 with the Chiefs in February 2020 and then chose to skip the following season to volunteer at a long-term care facility in Quebec during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic’s first wave.

The NFL commended him Thursday morning, recognizing his decision to pause his football career and help his community.

At six feet five inches and 321 pounds, Duvernay-Tardif was named one of five athletes honored as “Sportsperson of the Year: The Activist Athlete” by Sports Illustrated in 2020.
