Suleman Dawood, the 19-year-old student who was presumed dead in the tragic Titan submersible implosion, had reservations and fears about going on the deep-sea expedition, according to his aunt who spoke to NBC News.
Accompanying his father, Pakistani business executive Shahzada Dawood, Suleman embarked on the voyage to witness the sunken Titanic. However, he expressed his terror and lack of enthusiasm for the expedition to a relative. Despite his own reservations, he agreed to go as a Father’s Day gesture to please his father, who had a fascination with the history of the sunken ship.
The submersible, a 22-foot vessel owned by OceanGate, lost contact with its host ship shortly after descending towards the wreckage in the North Atlantic. On Thursday, debris from the vessel was discovered on the sea floor near the Titanic site, leading authorities to believe that the submersible imploded during its descent, resulting in the tragic deaths of all five individuals on board.
Azmeh, Shahzada Dawood’s older sister, described the thought of her 19-year-old nephew struggling to breathe on the vessel as “crippling”. The submersible had a 96-hour supply of breathable oxygen, and despite international search efforts, the chances of survival diminished with each passing hour.
Suleman Dawood had recently completed his first year as a business student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. The University expressed shock and deep sadness regarding his untimely demise.
Family friends told The New York Times that both Shahzada Dawood and his son had a passion for science fiction and traveling. Suleman was known for his enthusiasm in solving Rubik’s cubes and playing volleyball.
Shahzada Dawood, his wife Christine, and their daughter also resided in the United Kingdom.
The other passengers aboard the Titan were OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, wealthy British businessperson Hamish Harding, and French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
