Suggestion by Cam Newton: Florida documentary should have displayed greater respect towards Chris Leak

Before becoming a Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at Auburn, Cam Newton was a member of the Florida team that featured an impressive lineup including Tim Tebow, the Pouncey twins, Aaron Hernandez, and Percy Harvin. The rise and controversies of the Gators during that time were explored in the recent episode of Netflix’s “Untold” documentary series titled “Swamp Kings.” In the documentary, Newton expressed his criticism of how the team treated quarterback Chris Leak, who had a stellar career with the Gators from 2003 to 2006.

Newton voiced his displeasure in a TikTok video, stating, “Some of the things I did not like about the documentary was how they played Chris Leak, in my opinion. I was watching it like, they said things like, ‘We were just one quarterback away.’ Like, bro. Chris Leak was that guy. Let’s not forget how incredible he was as a freshman in the SEC, coming from Independence High School in Charlotte. Tebow may have been amazing, but let’s not overshadow Chris Leak.”

Leak had a remarkable career as a starting quarterback for the Gators, accumulating 11,213 passing yards and 88 touchdown passes. He was also part of the national championship team in 2006.

Newton also shared the sentiment of college football fans who were eager to see more about their years under Urban Meyer. He questioned the absence of players like Percy Harvin, Joe Haden, and the Pouncey twins in the documentary.

During his time at Florida, Newton himself faced controversy when he was charged with possessing a stolen laptop. However, the charges were dropped after completing a pre-trial diversion program. He later transferred to Blinn College, where he led the team to a NJCAA national championship.

In 2010, Newton joined Auburn University, where he threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns. He went on to win the Heisman Trophy and played a crucial role in helping Auburn achieve an undefeated national championship season. He was subsequently selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
