Indie-rock singer-songwriter, Sufjan Stevens, shared an update on his website regarding his health on Wednesday. He revealed that he is currently recovering from a rare neurological condition known as Guillain-Barré syndrome, which has temporarily affected his ability to walk. Stevens mentioned that he spent several weeks in the hospital but is expected to fully recover.
According to Stevens, he woke up one morning last month unable to walk, experiencing numbness and tingling in his hands, arms, and legs. After being taken to the emergency room by his brother, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that can cause muscle weakness and paralysis. The musician underwent treatment with immunoglobulin infusions, which proved to be effective. He then moved to a rehabilitation center for intensive physical therapy, noting that most individuals with this condition regain their ability to walk within a year.
Expressing his gratitude, Stevens acknowledged the efforts made by his doctors in saving his life and stabilizing his condition.
In addition to his health update, Stevens announced that he will be releasing a new album titled “Javelin” next month. Unfortunately, his health issues have hindered his participation in the album’s promotion.
Despite being in his second week of rehab, Stevens remains optimistic and dedicated to his recovery. He emphasized his commitment to getting better and expressed gratitude for the support of his team.
