Scottish Model Y owners Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey were left stunned when they were quoted a whopping CDN$29,000 to fix their Tesla Model Y battery, which was damaged by the typical wet weather in Scotland. The couple had driven through heavy rain to a restaurant, but their vehicle failed to start when they were ready to leave. After waiting for roadside assistance for five hours and facing frustrating communications with Tesla, they were informed that the wet weather had caused battery damage and that they would have to foot the £17,374 (approximately $28,900) repair bill.

In an interview with Scottish outlet Edinburgh Live, Bacigalupo expressed disbelief: “I honestly can’t believe that this has happened. When I first got the call, I thought we would get a bill for £500 or £1,000. When they said over 17 grand — it’s absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly.” Tesla claimed that the battery had been “effectively submerged in water” and that the damages were not covered by the vehicle’s eight-year warranty.

Tesla has promised to conduct an investigation into the matter after a complaint was lodged. However, the whole experience has left Bacigalupo feeling disappointed with the company’s customer service. He remarked, “If I had known the customer service would be so bad, I’m not sure I would have bothered buying the car. Do they know that we’re in Scotland? That weather was not abnormal for living here.”
