Feeling safe from crime in their communities can have a significant impact on reducing the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases, according to a new study.
Researchers conducted a study to determine the influence of different characteristics in neighborhoods on death rates, as well as the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The study analyzed data from nearly 36,000 Chinese adults aged 35 to 70. Participants completed questionnaires about their neighborhood environment, including feelings of safety from crime, community satisfaction, aesthetics of the surroundings (e.g. trees, litter, pavements), and ease of access to shops. Researchers also examined the medical records of the participants.

People who reported living in areas where they felt safe from crime were 10% less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases
During the average follow-up period of nearly 12 years, there were over 2000 deaths, including 765 deaths from cardiovascular disease. The study found that individuals who reported feeling safe in their neighborhoods had a 9% lower risk of mortality and a 10% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
