Street Safety in Boyle Heights to be Enhanced with $37.7 Million Infrastructure Grant

Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León made an exciting announcement on Friday, revealing that the neighborhood of Boyle Heights will receive a substantial boost in funding for pedestrian and street improvements. With a collective sum of $37.7 million in grants, this investment will bring about transformative changes.

The majority of these funds, amounting to $32 million, comes from the California Transportation Commission’s Active Transportation Program. This grant will be allocated towards infrastructure additions in the southern part of Boyle Heights. These additions include the planting of hundreds of trees, the installation of pedestrian lights, and the expansion of sidewalks. The project will be further supported by a local city matching grant of $5.7 million.

According to Councilman de León’s office, the southern portion of Boyle Heights has historically faced disparities in infrastructure development when compared to other areas of the neighborhood. This investment aims to address these inequities head-on.

In a statement, de León expressed his excitement about this project, describing it as a bold step towards addressing deep-rooted inequities. He emphasized the transformative nature of this investment, recognizing the importance of safer streets and improved access to essential destinations for the community.

The grant will specifically focus on enhancing accessibility and creating pedestrian and cycling connections between Wyvernwood, Estrada Courts, Mariachi Plaza, Hollenbeck Park, and the 6th Street Viaduct. By improving infrastructure along Boyle Avenue, Seventh Street, and Eighth Street corridors, this project will contribute to the creation of a safer, more inclusive, and more connected community.
