Stoneman Willie: Oldest Mummy in the US to Receive Long-Awaited Proper Burial after 128 Years on Display at Funeral Home

America’s oldest mummy, known as ‘Stoneman Willie,’ is finally getting a proper burial after being on display in a Pennsylvania funeral home for 128 years. Stoneman Willie, an alcoholic thief, died of kidney failure in a local jail in 1895 and was accidentally mummified by a mortician experimenting with embalming techniques. The man’s true identity remains a mystery as he had given a false name when he was arrested for pickpocketing. However, historical documents recently uncovered by Auman’s Funeral Home have now revealed his name, which will be revealed later this week during his burial ceremony. Stoneman Willie’s body, still surprisingly preserved with intact hair and teeth, will be laid to rest at Forest Hills Memorial Park on October 7. His mummified figure has become an iconic and storied part of Reading’s history.
