Steve Keim, former Cardinals GM, expresses frustration with Kyler Murray remarks

Kyler Murray’s recent comments about the Arizona Cardinals’ disastrous 2022 season seemed to unsettle former general manager Steve Keim. In a recent interview, Murray expressed his commitment to being coachable and doing his best but also acknowledged that if things aren’t working, everyone needs to take a hard look at themselves. Keim commented on the wording of Murray’s remarks, noting that the word “but” following a positive statement tends to diminish its impact. He also pointed out the pressure Murray faces after a disappointing 4-13 season, particularly because of his high salary of $46.1 million per year.

Keim, who took a step back from his role as GM in January for health reasons, had been with the Cardinals since 2013. Last July, he awarded Murray a lucrative five-year, $230.5 million contract extension. As the Cardinals’ season continued to spiral, rumors circulated about a possible rift between Murray and then-head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who was ultimately fired. Murray, who is currently recovering from a torn ACL, has spoken positively about the team’s new management and coaching staff, expressing optimism about the future. Keim acknowledged that this is a crucial year for Murray, as he needs to prove himself after his injury and the team’s struggles. The pressure is further intensified by the fact that the Cardinals hold the number one pick in the upcoming draft.

Since being drafted as the first overall pick in 2019, Murray has had a record of 25-31-1 in 57 games played. The Cardinals will kick off their season against the Commanders on September 10th.
