Steve Harwell, the co-founder and former lead singer of Smash Mouth, has passed away at the age of 56 due to complications from end-stage liver failure.

Harwell had recently entered hospice care and his manager, Robert Hayes, informed Insider’s Katherine Tangalakis-Lippert that he was expected to only have a few days to live.

Hayes later confirmed Harwell’s death with Rolling Stone and stated that the rock icon died at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family and friends.

Harwell retired in 2021, citing health concerns such as cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy, a neurological condition that can affect motor control and memory. Prior to retiring, he had exhibited erratic behavior and outbursts on stage, including slurred speech and yelling at fans.

Harwell had a long history of writing and performing songs with Smash Mouth, including their popular hit “All Star” from 2001, which gained further recognition after being featured in the movie “Shrek” and became a viral meme.

The band rose to prominence in the late 1990s with their debut album’s track “Walkin’ on the Sun” reaching number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks and number two on the Hot 100 charts.

Following Harwell’s retirement, Smash Mouth continued to tour with vocalist Zach Goode.
