Steve Cohen’s Investment in TGL: A Game-Changing Golf Startup co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has secured the founding rights to the New York team in the up-and-coming golf league called TGL (Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s Golf League), as confirmed by the organization on Thursday.

Managed by his family office, Cohen Private Ventures, his team will participate in TGL’s first season next year.

Cohen expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “As golf continues to gain popularity, there is a growing demand for improved access to the sport and its top players. We are thrilled to join TGL and build a team that will make New York proud.”

The financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed.

TGL, a highly anticipated high-tech golf league set to debut in January 2024, has already attracted a roster of exceptional players. Prominent names such as Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler, and Billy Horschel have committed to participating.

TGL operates in partnership with the PGA Tour, with players having the opportunity to compete in both leagues. The timing of TGL events is designed to complement the players’ PGA Tour schedules.

TGL’s introduction coincides with a critical crossroads in professional golf. While the PGA Tour and emerging rival LIV Golf have agreed to merge, a final agreement is still pending and faces scrutiny from Congress. A Senate hearing on the matter is expected in the coming week.

The CEO of TMRW Sports, Mike McCarley, and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy discuss the concept of the TGL golf league during a press conference prior to the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on August 24, 2022.

Under the ownership of Cohen, the New York team of TGL will play all events in Florida. However, the league plans to engage with golf and sports enthusiasts in the New York market through various events, community outreach, and the use of technology to cultivate fan bases.

Although a media deal for the league has yet to be announced, CNBC has learned that one is expected to be finalized soon.

Cohen’s ownership group is the fourth to join TGL, alongside Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Fenway Sports Group, tech founder Alexis Ohanian, and tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams. Notable investors in the league include basketball legend Stephen Curry, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, women’s soccer player Alex Morgan, pro footballer Tony Romo and Josh Allen, as well as singer Justin Timberlake.

Mike McCarley, co-founder of TMRW Sports, the company behind TGL, expressed his satisfaction with the addition of the New York team, stating, “The inclusion of New York as a TGL team not only continues the success of bringing major markets to TGL but also brings an ownership group with strong ties to other major league teams and fan bases. Steve Cohen’s ability and willingness to operate, promote, and market this team to New York fans is a significant step as we approach the launch of TGL in January.”

In addition to his involvement with TGL, Cohen, who chairs asset management firm Point72, is renowned as the owner of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets, serving as the team’s chair and CEO. Despite having the highest payroll in the league, the Mets have struggled this season and currently occupy second-to-last place in the National League East.
