Make Believe Ideas Ltd., a bookseller based in Hertfordshire, UK, has issued a recall of hundreds of thousands of board books designed for small children. The recall is necessary due to the discovery that plastic rings on these books can detach, posing a choking hazard. The affected books, part of the Rainbow Road Series, were sold across the United States at popular retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Sam’s Club, and Target, as well as online platforms like Amazon.com from March 2022 to August 2023.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released a notice alerting consumers to the recall. According to the commission, Make Believe Ideas Ltd. has received reports of two incidents in the United States and one in Australia where the plastic rings came loose. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time.
To ensure the safety of children, Make Believe Ideas Ltd. advises that consumers stop using the board books immediately. They can contact the company here to arrange a refund in the form of a gift card. Additionally, customer service can be reached at 877-206-1091, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT.
These board books were manufactured in China and were also sold at school book fairs. Individual titles retailed for approximately $10 to $11 or they could be purchased as a box set for around $21. In addition to sales in the U.S., approximately 12,900 books were sold in Canada.
The recall affects seven specific titles, each identified by a unique number printed on the right-hand corner on the back of the book, above the bar code. These titles are as follows:

2. Dinosaur’s First Words – ISBN: 9781803374932 and 9781803372211
3. Old MacDonald Had a Farm – ISBN: 9781803376790 and 9781803373355
4. Rainbow Road Book Box – ISBN: 9781803376288
5. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly – ISBN: 9781803372945 and 9781803371580
6. Things that Go! – ISBN: 9781803374826
7. Unicorn’s Colors – ISBN: 9781803374789 and 9781803376622
8. Where’s My Bottom? – ISBN: 9781803372723 and 9781803376738
Consumers who have purchased any of these books are urged to participate in the recall and return the products immediately.
