Start of Blood Donation Competition Among Cities in Coachella Valley Set for July 1st

The Coachella Valley will soon kick off its 11th annual 9 Cities Challenge blood donation competition, offering participants the chance to win exciting prizes.

From July 1 to August 31, residents of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Desert Hot Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Rancho Mirage, Coachella, Indian Wells, and Cathedral City can take part in this friendly competition, which will be held at various locations. To start things off, KESQ News Channel 3 will host a blood drive on Friday at its Thousand Palms headquarters.

During the competition, donors can visit specified locations in La Quinta and Rancho Mirage to ensure their donation is credited to their respective city. Each city will also organize blood drives throughout the two-month period.

“Every year, this event demonstrates the community’s commitment to health and brings great joy to all participants,” said Dr. Rick Axelrod, president, CEO, and medical director of LifeStream. “Summer is typically a challenging time for blood collection, so we aim to collect 1,500 pints of blood this year.”

Last year, Palm Springs emerged as the winner, collecting 229 pints out of the 1,100 pints donated by the nine cities over the two-month period. This blood supply assisted around 3,300 local patients.

The 9 Cities Challenge will recognize achievements in various categories, including the city with the highest number of collected pints, the city hosting the largest blood drive, and the city with the highest participation rate among its residents. Additionally, all individual donors will receive a 9 Cities Challenge bucket hat.

LifeStream supplies blood to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, and JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio.

“Every blood donation has an impact. Just one pint can save three lives. If we achieve our collection goal, not only will it be a record-breaking number for the 9 Cities Challenge, but it will also save over 4,500 lives,” stated Dr. Axelrod.
