Starmer Supports Building New Homes and Overcoming NIMBY Opposition

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has made a strong commitment to building 1.5 million new homes and is determined to overcome opposition from Nimbys, even if it means taking on his own party members. Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Sir Keir emphasized the need to “get Britain building again.”

During an interview with Times Radio, he was asked if he would crack down on Labour MPs who try to obstruct development in their own constituencies. In response, he said, “Yes, of course we will. That has been a persistent problem in politics, but we need to rise above it. It has hindered the progress of housing development over the past 13 years, and we cannot allow that to continue.”

Sir Keir went on to explain that the Labour Party aims to work collaboratively with local communities, bringing together local authorities to ensure the construction of housing in suitable locations. He highlighted the current issue of unregulated property hoarding and developers making the final decisions on housing locations. His vision is for local communities to have strategic input in deciding where homes are built, considering factors such as infrastructure, schools, and public services.

However, Sir Keir firmly stated that anyone who obstructs this vision, including Labour MPs who claim to support the project but oppose it in their own areas, will face consequences. He stressed the importance of taking a tough stance on those who stand in the way of progress.
