Starmer pledges to champion ‘fairness’ in Labour’s approach to trans self ID

In an interview with the Evening Standard, Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, discussed the party’s stance on transgender self-identification. He emphasized that the Labour Party will adopt a “fairer” approach to this issue if elected.

Sir Keir previously expressed his reservations about the policy of self-identification without a medical certificate, stating that it was not the “right way forward”. However, he reassured that the Labour Party will still work towards updating the law to facilitate gender changes for individuals who do not identify with their biological sex.

Sir Keir acknowledged the progress that has been made in terms of women’s rights within the Labour movement and affirmed the importance of not rolling back on those achievements. He also recognized the existence of a minority of individuals who do not identify with their assigned gender at birth and emphasized the need for a fairer approach to address their concerns.

Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, also expressed her support for transgender rights at the PinkNews awards. She declared that the next Labour government would protect trans rights as human rights and seek to modernize the law on gender recognition while upholding the Equality Act.
