Stacy Lewis: Leading Hungry U.S. Team in Pursuit of Solheim Cup Victory

ANDALUCIA, Spain — Stacy Lewis, the two-time playing champion and current team coach for Team USA at the Solheim Cup, describes the event as the “coolest week in women’s golf.”

Not only does the Solheim Cup have a national and global impact on women’s golf, but it also holds significant prestige. Lewis, who was part of winning teams in 2015 and 2017, understands the importance of the biennial tournament.

This year, the Solheim Cup is being held at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain, a beautiful golf destination on the Costa del Sol near Malaga. The matches will take place throughout the weekend, starting with foursomes on Friday, followed by better ball matches on Saturday, and concluding with the singles competition on Sunday.

Lewis, who is 38 years old and still competing on the LPGA tour, became a mentor for Team USA during the 2019 Solheim Cup in Scotland. Despite withdrawing with a back injury, she stayed on as an assistant coach and expressed her desire to lead Team USA in the future.

As a mom with a young daughter, Lewis is juggling her responsibilities on and off the golf course. However, she is determined to develop the best team players and match play combinations to bring back the Cup to the United States. The U.S. currently holds a 10-7 advantage in the tournament since its inception in 1990.

In a recent podcast, Lewis praised Lilia Vu, the number two player in the world, for her clutch putting skills. She believes Vu is a player to be feared in this year’s Solheim Cup.

Ally Ewing, a member of Team USA, expressed her respect for Lewis and her excitement about the upcoming tournament. Ewing believes that with Lewis as coach and a strong team, they have a great chance to bring the Cup back to the United States.

One strategy Lewis has shared is the importance of enjoying the moment. She wants the atmosphere to be relaxed and fun, believing that getting too tense can make golf more challenging.
