Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast garnered attention due to interviews with high-profile celebrities such as Serena Williams and Mariah Carey.
However, discussions regarding a second series have hit a snag, and reports suggest that the Duchess will not receive the full payment agreed upon in the multi-year deal.
A joint statement from Spotify and Archewell, the production company owned by the royal couple, confirmed their mutual decision to part ways.
Yet, there are signs of strained relations, as a Spotify executive referred to the Duke and Duchess as “grifters”.
Bill Simmons, a senior podcasting executive at Spotify, made these remarks on his own show, stating, “The grifters. That’s the podcast we should have launched with them. I’ve got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories. The grifters.”
Meghan has faced criticism for her involvement in the podcast, with accusations that she did not personally speak to some of the guests, instead delegating the interviews to a producer.
In the wake of the end of the Sussex contract, Spotify announced a deal with Trevor Noah during a panel discussion at the Cannes Lions Festival. This marks the streaming service’s first major deal since their split with the Sussexes.
Despite spending over $1 billion on podcast ventures, Spotify has recently scaled back due to significant losses. The company, having acquired controversial commentator Joe Rogan for approximately $100 million, has undergone extensive job cuts and the departure of their podcasting executive, Dawn Ostroff.
Now, Spotify is shifting its focus towards attracting creators to the platform and generating revenue through advertising, curtailing its original programming efforts.
While Spotify continues to sign contracts with renowned hosts, such as Louis Theroux for an original show, industry analysts anticipate these deals to be on a smaller scale.
Trevor Noah expressed his excitement for joining Spotify in a statement, remarking, “It’s really exciting to be joining Spotify on a fun new adventure, engaging in interesting and meaningful conversations with some of the world’s most fascinating people. We’ll also probably fix every single issue humankind has ever faced, so you definitely want to join us for every episode.”
Julie McNamara, Spotify’s head of podcasts, added, “We are excited to collaborate with Trevor to create an original podcast that seamlessly combines his unique humor, insightful commentary, and exceptional interviewing skills on a global scale.”
