Spotify Executive Criticizes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Describing Them as ‘Deceptive Opportunists’

A Spotify executive, Bill Simmons, has criticized Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, referring to them as “grifters,” which sheds light on the recent decision to no longer host the couple’s podcast, Archetypes. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a $20-million deal with Spotify in 2020 and gained popularity with their 12-episode first season of Archetypes, where Meghan interviewed friends and celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Mindy Kaling, and Serena Williams. Despite its success and being the number-one podcast in multiple markets, Spotify has ended its partnership with the couple.

Simmons expressed his frustration on his own podcast, The Bill Simmons Podcast, calling Harry and Meghan “grifters” and criticizing their presence on Spotify. He even mentioned a Zoom meeting he had with Harry to help him with a podcast idea, stating that he would share the story about it when he gets drunk. Simmons previously shared his annoyance at having to “share” Spotify with Prince Harry.

Spotify and Archewell Audio, Harry and Meghan’s production company, released a joint statement confirming the mutual decision to part ways. It is unclear why the podcast will not continue for a second season on Spotify or if it will move to another streaming site. However, Meghan’s talent agency representative hinted that Archetypes may continue on another platform.

Both Spotify and the Duke and Duchess have faced challenges recently. Spotify has announced job cuts, and Prince Harry has been involved in a legal battle with the Daily Mirror publisher over privacy invasion and illegal practices. The Wall Street Journal reports that the couple will not receive the full $20 million payout from the Spotify deal.
