Special Counsel Jack Smith vehemently opposes former President Donald Trump’s request to postpone the trial for mishandling classified documents until after the 2024 presidential election. Smith clarifies, “While the classified materials in question were taken from the White House and retained at Mar-a-Lago, the dispute lies in how and why it occurred, what Trump knew, and his intentions in retaining them. These issues will be proven primarily with unclassified evidence at trial.”
Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges in the case.
Smith’s filing is in response to a motion by Trump’s lawyers Christopher Kise and Todd Blanche, who requested that the trial be postponed until after the 2024 presidential election. They cited discovery issues and conflicts in scheduling, including Trump’s federal election interference trial overseen by Smith, scheduled for next March.
“The trial date in the District of Columbia and the underlying schedule require President Trump and his lawyers to be in two places at once,” wrote Kise and Blanche last week.
Judge Aileen Cannon, presiding over the classified documents trial, has already denied a previous attempt by Trump to schedule the trial after the 2024 presidential contest.
