New House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced on Sunday that aid to Israel will be deliberated on the House floor as a standalone measure this week. He expressed confidence that the measure would pass, despite President ‘s call for a broader package that includes aid to Ukraine.
Johnson stated in an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” that the House plans to pass a standalone Israel funding bill, and he believes there will be bipartisan support for it.
He emphasized that while there are global issues that require attention, the ongoing situation in Israel demands immediate action and separate consideration.
According to Palestinian health officials, more than 8,000 people, including women and children, have been killed in Gaza since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. In Israel, approximately 1,400 people have died.
Last week, the White House requested that Congress provide over $105 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and other national security needs. This includes $61.4 billion for Ukraine and $14.3 billion for Israel. The requested amount for humanitarian assistance is $9.15 billion.
The aid to Israel includes funding for air and missile defense systems, specifically the Iron Dome. It also involves replenishing Department of Defense stockpiles and enhancing U.S. embassy security.
Following his election as speaker, Johnson met with President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss additional funding for national security.
The White House submitted two funding requests to Congress last week: $56 billion for domestic purposes and additional funding for national security, energy assistance, disaster relief, child care, internet access, and food assistance programs.
Before becoming speaker, Johnson voted with 93 Republicans to cut off aid to Ukraine. However, he now intends to “bifurcate” aid to Israel and Ukraine, while also addressing Russia’s actions.
Johnson’s move has given renewed hope to the approval of additional aid for Ukraine. His predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., removed Ukraine funding from a September funding bill due to pressure from conservative hard-liners.
