FIFA has recently suspended Luis Rubiales, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, for three months. This suspension comes as a result of Rubiales’ unwanted kiss of midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the trophy presentation for the Women’s World Cup on August 20th in Sydney. The incident has sparked controversy and legal action, with Hermoso accusing Rubiales of sexual assault. Spanish prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil has filed a complaint against Rubiales, alleging sexual assault and coercion.

If the case proceeds, Rubiales may face fines or even a prison sentence under the “only yes means yes” law, which was passed by Spain’s congress last year. Rubiales insists that the kiss was consensual, but the judge will ultimately determine the outcome of the investigation. Additionally, Australian authorities will be consulted to determine if the incident would be considered criminal in their country.

Aside from the legal ramifications, Rubiales is facing pressure from various parties to resign from his position. The public outcry against him has been widespread, with many calling for his resignation. The Spain women’s national team even threatened to boycott international matches until Rubiales steps down. The turmoil surrounding Rubiales has also led to changes within the federation, including the firing of manager Jorge Vilda.

Despite these challenges, the Spain women’s national team continues their preparations for upcoming matches. They are set to face Sweden in a Nations League match on September 22nd in Gothenburg, Sweden.
