May 30 (UPI) — Spain signed NASA’s Artemis Accords on Tuesday, becoming the 25th nation to join the set of principles that guide space exploration. The accords are part of NASA’s ambitious plan to return humans to the moon.

Spain’s minister of science and innovation Diana Morant signed the agreement during a ceremony at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace. Spanish President Pedro Sanchez and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson were among the dignitaries present.

“As the newest member of the Artemis Accords family, Spain will safeguard our shared ideals by helping ensure that humanity’s rapid expansion into space is done peacefully, safely, and transparently,” stated Nelson in a press release issued by NASA.

The non-binding Artemis Accords, established in 2020 with eight founding members, lay down principles for peaceful space exploration for the benefit of all humanity. The accords are an integral part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface in 2024.

Accord signatories will play crucial roles in achieving “a sustainable and robust presence” on the Moon within the next decade, as preparations for a Mars mission continue.

In a statement, Sanchez’s office emphasized the significance of the agreement in strengthening the relationship between the United States and Spain while ensuring the safe expansion of humanity into space, which has the potential to generate growth and opportunities for both nations.

“Space is an example of international collaboration and a priority for our country’s vision,” Sanchez stated.

“We are witnessing a commitment by the government of Spain to a key sector that generates opportunities and high-quality employment, which is a priority and strategic area, essential to help and protect our society.”

The signing of the agreement followed Sanchez’s visit to Washington, D.C., where he and President Joe Biden discussed enhancing scientific cooperation between their countries. The leaders pledged to deepen collaboration in science and technology, including through the Artemis Accords.

Spain’s signing of the agreement comes shortly after the Czech Republic joined the accords on May 3, and more countries are expected to become signatories in the coming months.
