Aug. 20 (UPI) — In the 29th minute of the match, left back Olga Carmona scored the winning goal, surpassing England’s goalie Mary Earps and leading Spain to their first Women’s World Cup title. Reflecting on the incredible achievement, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati expressed her pride, stating, “I don’t have any words for this moment. It’s unbelievable. I am so proud.”

Striker Mariona Caldentey played a crucial role in the Carmona goal by providing an assist. Spain exhibited dominance by outshooting England 14-7. Additionally, Carmona’s accomplishment was exceptional as she became only the seventh player in history to score in both the semifinals and final of a Women’s World Cup.

The Spanish team, ranked sixth, defied expectations by becoming the lowest-ranked team to ever win a Women’s World Cup. Bonmati was recognized with the Golden Ball award, acknowledging her as the tournament’s best player.

Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa claimed the Golden Boot award, scoring an impressive five goals throughout the tournament.

England had an early chance to take the lead in the final. Midfielder Lucy Bronze initiated the play with a pass from the right side, which was tapped down by Rachel Daly. Striker Lauren Hemp then struck the crossbar with a powerful shot.

Spain quickly responded with their own close attempt less than two minutes later. Striker Alba Redondo’s shot, however, was blocked by Earps.

In the 29th minute, Carmona broke the deadlock with a goal. Caldentey controlled the ball approximately 40 yards from the goal and initiated an overlapping run on Carmona’s left side. Caldentey delivered a precise pass into the box, allowing Carmona to shoot with her left foot. The ball evaded a diving Earps and found the back of the net, ultimately securing the victory for Spain.

Spain nearly extended their lead in the first half’s stoppage time when Salma Paralluelo hit the right post. Earps made a diving save on Caldentey’s shot in the 50th minute, denying Spain another close opportunity.

In the 64th minute, Spain was awarded a penalty kick due to an England handball in the box. Earps displayed her skills once again by saving the shot taken by midfielder Jennifer Hermoso.

Both Spain and England continued to pose threats, but were unable to find the net for another goal.
