Spain and Morocco in Dispute: Who will Host the 2030 World Cup Final?

Argentina’s Football Federation and Conmebol Vice President, Claudio Tapia, along with Argentine presidential candidate, Sergio Massa, made a significant announcement during a press conference. They held jerseys with the number ‘2030’ written on them to signify that Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will be hosting the inaugural matches of the 2030 World Cup. The World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Ahmed Eljechtemi and Emma Pinedo reported on the developments. However, even as the joint hosts were confirmed, there were indications of disagreement between the countries. Both Morocco and Spain claimed the right to host the final game.

Spain’s Sports Minister, Miquel Iceta, expressed his expectations during an interview on Onda Cero radio. He mentioned that although one should not celebrate prematurely, he believed that the final would take place in Spain. On the other hand, Fouzi Lekjaa, the head of Morocco’s football federation, expressed his desire for the final to be held in Casablanca. He hoped that the culmination of their efforts would lead to celebrations in the historic Casablanca stadium.

The relationship between Spain and Morocco has long been characterized by disputes over migration and territory. Conflicts surrounding Spain’s enclaves in Africa and the influx of illegal migrants from Morocco have led to diplomatic crises. However, relations between the two countries improved last year as Madrid aligned itself with Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara dispute.

In a surprising announcement, FIFA awarded the 2030 World Cup to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. To commemorate the tournament’s centenary, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host three matches. Lekjaa revealed that a meeting between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal is scheduled for October 18 in Rabat to discuss the match schedule. Six cities in Morocco have been chosen as match venues.

Iceta added that the three federations have been collaborating for some time, and there is already a preliminary agreement on how to allocate the matches.
