June 30 (UPI) — On Friday, a significant moment took place as the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft descended and landed near the Florida coast. This successful landing marked the completion of its mission, during which it transported vital scientific experiments and samples from the International Space Station.
The Dragon disengaged from the ISS’s Harmony module on Thursday and executed a safe descent aided by parachutes, ultimately splashing down around 10:30 EDT off the coast of Florida on Friday.
The Dragon spacecraft was initially launched from Kennedy Space Center on June 5 and accomplished its docking with the ISS on June 6.
During its journey to the ISS, the Dragon carried an impressive load of over 7,000 pounds of experiments and equipment, including the deployment of the International Space Station Roll-Out Arrays. These arrays serve as essential upgrades to enhance the station’s power systems.
It is noteworthy that certain experiments aboard the Dragon have been onboard the ISS for a remarkable six years.
Among these experiments are the GRIP Dexterous Manipulation in Microgravity chair, developed by the European Space Agency. This chair studies how astronauts can manipulate objects in microgravity. Additionally, there is the GRASP (Gravitational References for Sensimotor Performance: Reaching and Grasping) experiment, which examines the impacts of microgravity on the human nervous system.
The Dragon spacecraft also returned with samples from the Myotones, Monoclonal Antibodies, and BioNutrients-2 experiments.
All the samples and experiments retrieved from the Dragon will undergo evaluation at NASA’s Space Station Processing Facility located at Kennedy Space Center.
