Southern California Gas and Other Utilities Collaborate on Advancing `Direct Air Capture’ Technology

A consortium comprising Southern California Gas Co. has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for a groundbreaking proposal to establish California’s first full-scale direct air capture and storage network of regional hubs. This initiative marks a significant milestone in California’s journey towards decarbonization and achieving net-zero goals,” stated Maryam Brown, President of SoCalGas. She further added, “To accomplish California’s transition to net-zero, we need a diverse energy portfolio and decarbonization tools like carbon management to effectively reduce emissions.”

The project has the potential to remove one million metric tons of carbon dioxide directly from the air on an annual basis while facilitating a more inclusive energy transition,” Brown continued. “Extensive research indicates that carbon management, combined with electrification and clean fuels, offers the most cost-effective, resilient, and technologically sound pathway to complete carbon neutrality.”

The California Direct Air Capture hub, located in Kern County, has been selected by the Department of Energy to receive up to $11.8 million in funding for the study of a regional carbon management hub. This project is one of only five initiatives across the country to receive funding under the Department’s $3.5 billion Direct Air Capture Hubs program and the sole project based in California.

The hub brings together nearly 40 organizations from various sectors including industry, community, tribes, government, technology, national labs, academia, labor, and workforce development. SoCalGas will lead the advancement of the Front-End Engineering Design study, focusing on transporting captured carbon from the air to permanent storage facilities within the region. Initial estimations suggest that the hub could potentially eliminate over one million metric tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 220,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.

Carbon management, in conjunction with other clean energy tools like hydrogen and renewable natural gas, plays a pivotal role in SoCalGas’ comprehensive clean energy strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
