Ted Kaczynski, notorious as the “Unabomber” for his 17-year bombing campaign which resulted in the death of three people and injured 23 others, has died by suicide at the age of 81. Kaczynski was suffering from late-stage cancer and was found unresponsive in his cell at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina; however, he was subsequently revived before being pronounced dead later that morning. Following the increased scrutiny faced by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Kaczynski’s death comes as another controversial event. Already serving four life sentences, Kaczynski had been held in the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado since 1998. Using meticulously designed handcrafted wooden boxes, his bombing campaign caused terror across universities and airlines and even resulted in smoke inhalation for passengers aboard an American Airlines flight in 1979. Despite being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, Kaczynski refused to accept his mental illness and pleaded guilty to his crimes. During his incarceration, he became an iconic figure for both the far-right and far-left, as well as being an object of fascination among those opposing modern civilization.
