Soup Cooked by a £50,000 Robot in Just 45 Minutes

Introducing Moley Chef’s Table, a revolutionary kitchen appliance developed by London-based company Moley Robotics. This state-of-the-art £50,000 robotic chef is capable of preparing meals without any human intervention, as long as the ingredients are already cut up. MailOnline recently had the opportunity to experience the culinary creations of this robotic marvel at the company’s upcoming showroom on Wigmore Street.

Chef’s Table is not limited to home use; it is also designed to assist chefs in airports, hospitals, and restaurants. With concerns about machines taking over human jobs, Moley Robotics assures that their gadget is intended to make cooks’ lives easier, particularly for those who work long hours. Mark Oleynik, the Russian entrepreneur who founded the company in 2015, explained that Chef’s Table is not equipped to handle complicated dishes like sushi, but rather focuses on automating repetitive or mundane cooking tasks such as boiling soup or continuously stirring risotto.

Upon arrival at the showroom, MailOnline observed Chef’s Table surrounded by prepped ingredients ready to be picked up by its extendable arm. The arm features a claw that securely holds kitchen utensils and can neatly hang them up once finished. Users can input their desired recipes into a companion tablet, as long as the instructions only involve stovetop cooking, as Chef’s Table does not have an oven yet. There is a larger, more expensive model under development that includes an oven, priced between £250,000 and £300,000.

During the demonstration, Chef’s Table started by preparing a simple cheese omelette with a tap on the tablet. The tablet displayed a timeline of the preparation process and upcoming steps. This robotic chef ladled pre-whisked eggs, cracked by a human, into the pan along with grated cheese. Although it spilled some cheese on the hob, the omelette cooked for about five minutes. While it had some difficulty removing the omelette from the pan, it turned out delicious. The robot then ventured into making a soup from scratch, carefully sautéing chopped carrots, onions, celery, and adding sweet potato, coconut milk, and vegetable stock. The process took over half an hour with occasional stirring, but Chef’s Table managed it effortlessly. Finally, it smoothly transformed the soup into a silky texture using a hand blender.

Admittedly, the total cooking time of 42 minutes for a meal seemed a bit excessive. In a restaurant kitchen, the head chef would undoubtedly urge the robot to pick up the pace. However, Chef’s Table shows great potential for airport usage, allowing passengers to grab a quick robot-made meal before their flights. While the sight of such machines may currently appear unusual, Oleynik believes that society will become accustomed to them in the next decade. He likens their integration into everyday life to that of dishwashing machines, stating that they will become routine appliances.

In other related news, scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed a robot chef with the ability to recreate recipes by watching cooking videos. This robot utilizes advanced artificial intelligence to analyze each frame of the videos, identifying objects such as vegetables, hands, and knives, and understanding their usage. Over time, it learns which ingredients complement each other and can even detect when a human chef may have used incorrect measurements. This robotic chef serves as a formidable competition to esteemed chefs like Gordon Ramsay and is a testament to the continuous advancements in culinary technology.
