Sony has recently introduced the latest generation of its console gaming line, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), in a slimmed-down and stripped-back version. The new PS5 model boasts a smaller and lighter form factor, as well as a detachable disk drive and an additional terabyte of storage. Initially, the PS5 ‘Slim’ will be available in the US and later roll out to other locations. The retail price for the UK market is £479.99, while the US market will have a price tag of $499.99. Additionally, the Digital Edition, which excludes the disk drive, will retail at £389.99 in the UK and $449.99 in the US. The release date for the new PS5 is just around the corner, and we have all the details you need to know.

PlayStation 5 Slim: Key Specifications

  • Price: £479.99 in the UK ($499.99 in the US). The Digital Edition, without the disk drive, retails at £389.99 ($449.99 in the US).
  • Availability: November in the US, followed by other locations.
  • Storage: 1TB
  • Size: Approximately 30% reduction in volume and 18-24% reduction in weight, depending on the edition.
  • Key Features: Clear slits on either side between the panes and dual USB-C ports at the front, replacing the previous model’s single USB-C and USB-A ports.

The new PS5 model significantly downsizes from its predecessor, offering a 30% reduction in volume and an 18-24% decrease in weight, depending on the edition. For those who purchase the digital edition, there will be an option to upgrade to the standard edition by attaching a separate disk drive, priced at £99 in the UK and $79.99 in the US. Sony also announced that this new model will replace the previous version, indicating that once the remaining consoles of the last generation are sold out, no more will be produced.

According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications for Sony, ‘Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.’ Apart from the size reduction, the overall design of the console remains largely the same as the previous versions. Mr. Shuman added, ‘There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte.’ Clear slits on either side between the panes and dual USB-C ports at the front, replacing the single USB-C and USB-A ports on the previous model, are notable new features.

The previous PS5 model received criticism for its large size, measuring 15.3in x 10.2in x 4in (39cm x 26cm x 10.4cm). With the new slimmer version, measuring just over one inch (3cm) shorter, it presents a more appealing choice. The upgrade also introduces new side panels and rearranged USB ports. Additionally, Sony plans to release detachable panels in alternative colors, such as matte Black and the Deep Earth Collection in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, early in 2024. These panels will be priced at £44.99 in the UK and $54.99 in the US. Moreover, the new editions include 1TB of storage as standard, an upgrade from the 825GB available on the older version.

The new PS5 model will come with a horizontal stand, and a separate vertical stand will be available for purchase at £24.99 in the UK and $29.99 in the US. This release follows the leak of the early PS5 design by rival Microsoft. Microsoft claimed in June 22 filings that Sony ‘is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point’ as its ‘less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99.’ Gamers can expect the new PlayStation 5 Slim to hit the shelves in November.
