Some consultants can make in one night what some nurses earn in a whole month

According to recent data, the cost of a consultant’s strike in the UK can amount to £2,152 per night, a figure that surpasses the salaries of some nurses in lower pay bands. While nurses start at a salary of £22,383 per year or £1,865.25 per month, the average income for a nurse after a 5% pay increase is estimated to be between £33,000 and £35,000, equivalent to up to £2,916 per month.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay claims that striking hospital consultants, who have two additional walkouts scheduled for next month, belong to the top 2% of earners in the UK. However, it’s worth noting that there are currently over 7.6 million people on NHS waiting lists, a concerning increase of over 400,000 since Rishi Sunak vowed to reduce wait times.

NHS officials anticipate significant disruptions in patient care during the upcoming strike, with emergency care being handled by consultants while most routine procedures are paused. An independent report by the Office of Manpower Economics revealed that half of the consultants surveyed expressed satisfaction with their pay, while only 30% reported dissatisfaction. The pay range for consultants this year is between £93,666 and £126,281, an increase from the previous range of £88,364 to £119,133. Including on-call responsibilities, medical awards, and geographical allowances, the average annual earnings for consultants in the NHS amount to approximately £143,100.

In comparison to consultants in other countries, those in England earn higher salaries than their counterparts in New Zealand, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal. Among 28 countries, England is ranked sixth in terms of consultant pay, with the Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany ranked higher.
