The Warren and Downey high school football teams will face off under the bright lights of SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. This exciting announcement was made on Wednesday.
Mark your calendars for October 13th, when these two Los Angeles-area high school teams will make history as the first to play a football game in the new Inglewood stadium. The winning team will also receive recognition during the college football L.A. Bowl on December 16th.
“L.A. Bowl is dedicated to promoting education, health, wellness, and physical activity through various events in the local community,” said Adolfo Romero, Vice President of Programming and Booking at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “We are thrilled to extend these efforts by welcoming the students, faculty, and families of Downey High School and Warren High School to SoFi Stadium for its inaugural high school football game.”
The Warren and Downey football programs have a long-standing rivalry in Los Angeles. During their last meeting, Warren emerged as the victor with a score of 49-22 against Downey. Interestingly, Downey went on to win the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship.
“As a former Downey Viking player, I know that the Downey vs. Warren game is highly anticipated by our players every year. Competing in this crosstown rivalry game and being the first-ever high school game played at SoFi Stadium will create a lasting memory for our players,” stated Jack Williams, head coach of Downey High School.
Kevin Pearson, the head coach of Warren High, expressed that the rivalry with Downey is one of the best in Los Angeles high school football. He said, “Throughout my 28 years as a head coach in the Los Angeles area, I have witnessed many great rivalries, but I’ve always believed that the Warren vs. Downey rivalry is the best kept secret. I am thrilled that the dedication and hard work from Downey Unified, administration, teachers, staff, students, and families will be showcased at this historic event. I am humbled and honored that our unique and historical rivalry has been chosen for the first high school football game hosted at SoFi Stadium.”
Tickets for the game will be available for purchase starting on Thursday at 10 a.m. on ticketmaster.com.
