This historic event marked the first-ever high school football game at the prestigious Inglewood stadium. Warren High School’s remarkable win earned them the privilege to return and be recognized before the L.A. Bowl, held on December 16th.
Prior to the game, Adolfo Romero, Vice President of Programming and Booking at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, expressed his commitment to education, health, wellness, and physical activity through community events. He stated, “We’re thrilled to maintain this focus by welcoming the students, faculty, and families of Downey High School and Warren High School to SoFi Stadium for its inaugural high school football game.”
The rivalry between Warren and Downey football programs is one of Los Angeles’ longest-standing conflicts. In their previous encounter, Warren secured a 49-22 victory against Downey. However, Downey bounced back and claimed the CIF Southern Section Division 4 championship.
Head Coach Jack Williams of Downey stated, “As a former Downey Viking player, the Downey vs. Warren game is something I know players look forward to every year. Being able to compete in this crosstown rivalry game and being the first-ever high school game at SoFi Stadium will be an extra special memory for our players.”
Kevin Pearson, Head Coach of Warren High, acknowledged the significance of the Warren vs. Downey rivalry in Los Angeles high school football, stating, “Having been a head coach in the Los Angeles area for 28 years, I’m aware of many great rivalries, but I’ve always said that the Warren vs. Downey rivalry was the best kept secret in high school football. I’m honored that our unique and historical rivalry has been selected for the first high school football game hosted at SoFi Stadium.”
