Soccer star Josh Daniels, who experienced immense loss in the Buncrana pier tragedy, joyfully marries his long-term partner.

Joshua Daniels, former Derry City winger and survivor of the tragic Buncrana pier incident, recently tied the knot with his longtime partner Hannah. Their wedding took place at the beautiful Drenagh Estate in Limavady, Co Derry, followed by a joyful reception. Josh shared a heartwarming picture of the newlyweds on Instagram, captioned “The Daniels 15.06.23”, expressing the joyousness of the occasion. This day marked a significant milestone for the couple, as they have been together for several years and have two lovely daughters named Zahra and Éabha. Hannah has been an incredible source of support for Josh, especially during the challenging period when he lost five of his family members in the tragic incident of 2016.

The Buncrana pier tragedy claimed the lives of Sean McGrotty (49), his sons Mark (12) and Evan (8), his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels, and her daughter Jodie-Lee when their car slipped off the algae-covered slipway and sank into Lough Swilly. Josh’s sister Louise James was in a relationship with Sean, and his baby niece Ríoghnach-Ann miraculously survived, thanks to the heroic efforts of Davitt Walsh. Davitt bravely swam in freezing waters to rescue the baby after Josh’s desperate plea for help. Davitt’s act of heroism earned him widespread recognition and the Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland Award.

Despite the immense tragedy, Josh managed to find strength and returned to the soccer field for Derry City shortly after. In May 2016, he scored his first goal for the club, symbolizing his resilience. He later joined Glenavon in August 2017, where he made a significant impact with 87 appearances and 13 goals. In 2020, Josh signed with Shrewsbury Town in the English League One, contributing two goals in 40 appearances, including a notable performance against Premier League team Liverpool in last season’s FA Cup Third Round tie.

In 2022, rather than returning to the Irish League, Josh made the decision to sign with The New Saints (TNS) in Wales. As he explained to the Belfast Telegraph, family reasons played a crucial role in this choice. Josh and his family have found a comfortable life in Wales, with their young one soon starting school nearby. The proximity of TNS to their home made it an ideal move for their family’s well-being and Josh’s football career.

Joshua Daniels’s journey is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity. His wedding day marked not only a celebration of love but also a reminder of the strength and support he has found amidst life’s challenges.
