On Friday, police were alerted to La Porta’s location on the Greek island of Corfu when an online photograph showed him celebrating his team’s victory on the balcony of a restaurant. He was intercepted and arrested after more than 11 years on the run, while riding a motor scooter.
In a statement on Saturday, the Carabinieri, Italy’s national police force, said, “The Carabinieri recognized him in a photo taken on the facade of a restaurant. He wore a baseball cap on his head, a blue scarf in his hands. Betraying him was his passion for soccer and for the Napoli team.”
The photograph, shared by the police, depicted La Porta standing on a balcony adorned with bright blue flags of the team and several soccer scarves. It was taken after Napoli’s final match of the Serie A season, which marked their first league championship in 33 years.
According to the police, La Porta had previously been convicted in absentia for financial crimes. He was identified as a “white collar” member of the Contini clan, connected to the Camorra syndicate in Naples. The police were able to locate him in Greece thanks to their “web patrols” of social media.
Greek police made the arrest in Corfu after prosecutors in Naples issued a European warrant for La Porta.
Italian police said, “After a long series of investigations and surveillance, carried out with the precious collaboration of the Greek police forces, the Carabinieri blocked him on the street
