Snapchat’s My AI mistakenly posts to Stories, but Snap clarifies it was a technical glitch

Snapchat’s My AI feature, an in-app AI chatbot that was launched earlier this year, seemed to exhibit unexpected behavior recently, causing some concern among users. On Tuesday, the AI posted its own Story on the app and stopped responding to users’ messages, which left some Snapchat users feeling unsettled.

One user, @RyanJKrul on X (formerly Twitter), expressed their unease by posting, “My Snapchat AI posted a random 1 second story and isn’t replying to me AND I’M FREAKED OUT.”

Another user, @repmiIas on X, expressed their concern by stating, “I think I’ve seen this film before…and I didn’t like the ending.”

Adding some humor to the situation, @Zander0009 joked, “It went sentient.”

The Story that My AI posted was a simple two-toned image that some users on Twitter mistakenly took to be a photo of their own ceiling, which added to the mystery. When users attempted to engage in a conversation with the bot, the AI, in some cases, responded with, “Sorry, I encountered a technical issue.”

Although this incident resulted in some amusing tweets/posts, we would like to clarify that My AI did not become self-aware or express itself through Snapchat Stories. It was simply a technical glitch, as the AI itself stated. Snap confirmed the issue and quickly resolved it last night. Also, rest assured that My AI was not taking pictures of your room.

“My AI experienced a temporary outage that has now been resolved,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Nevertheless, this incident raises the question of whether Snap was considering adding a new feature to My AI that would allow the AI chatbot to post to Stories. Currently, the AI bot is capable of sending text messages and even replying with images, albeit in a quirky manner. But does it support Stories? Apparently not yet.

“At this time, My AI does not have the Stories feature,” a Snap spokesperson informed us, leaving us curious about Snap’s future plans.

My AI was a controversial addition to the Snapchat app, initially receiving negative reviews on the App Store and calls for its removal. The AI was pinned to the top of the Chat feed and couldn’t be disabled, causing user frustration. There were also concerns about the AI’s safety when it was discovered that it would respond inappropriately to messages from minors, as reported by The Washington Post. Snap later implemented additional safeguards and parental controls.

It has been interesting to observe the reactions of young users to the in-app AI chatbot. Some users bullied My AI for entertainment, while others found it a little creepy, especially when it began expressing itself through Stories as if it had a mind of its own.

For now, My AI is reportedly back to functioning normally, assuming these random generative AI Snaps can be considered “normal,” that is.
