Six former Mississippi police officers admit to torturing African American men

In a shocking case of police brutality, six former Mississippi law enforcement officers have pleaded guilty. This incident has been described by the local sheriff as “the most horrible incident of police brutality I’ve learned of over my whole career.” The severity of their crimes is reflected in the potential sentences faced by the officers. Two of them could be sentenced to life in prison, while the other four face sentences ranging from 80 to 100 years. In addition, they may be required to pay millions in fines. The incident occurred on January 24th, when Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker, both Black individuals, were staying at the home of a white woman in a predominantly white neighborhood. The police were called by a neighbor who found their presence suspicious. This case sheds light on the racial bias within law enforcement.USA Today reports.

Jenkins and Parker have described the horrifying ordeal they endured. They were subjected to 90 minutes of physical abuse, sexual assault, and Taser attacks. Additionally, they had eggs, milk, alcohol, and chocolate syrup poured down their throats. They were forced to strip naked and shower to remove any evidence of the violence that had been inflicted upon them. Tragically, one of them was even shot in the mouth. It is important to note that this was not an isolated incident. The first responding officer was associated with a group of officers known as the “Goon Squad.” This group was infamous for using excessive force and failing to report it. A subsequent investigation revealed that some of these officers had been involved in four other violent encounters with Black men, resulting in two deaths and one individual suffering lasting injuries since 2019. This case demonstrates a systemic pattern of racial discrimination and abuse within law enforcement.

Following the acts of violence, the officers attempted to frame Jenkins and Parker by fabricating evidence and filing false charges against them. The six former officers involved in this incident, Brett McAlpin, Christian Dedmon, Jeffrey Middleton, Hunter Elward, Daniel Opdyke, and Joshua Hartfield, now face numerous federal charges, including civil rights conspiracy, deprivation of rights under color of law, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice. They also face state charges, including aggravated assault, home invasion, obstruction of justice in the first degree, and conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice. All of these officers were either fired or resigned from their positions after the incident came to light. Justice must be served for the victims and a message must be sent that such behavior will not be tolerated in law enforcement. (Read more Mississippi stories.)
