Sir Tony Blair predicts that the UK will rejoin the EU in the future

Sir Tony Blair has expressed his belief in the eventual re-entry of the United Kingdom into the European Union, as a recent poll reveals a five-year high in support for rejoining the bloc.

Speaking to the New Statesman magazine, the former Labour prime minister stated that “a future generation” would lead Britain “back into Europe.”

This comes as Deltapoll released a survey showing a growth in support for EU re-entry. The company’s most recent tracker poll, conducted between July 21-24, indicates that 56 percent of respondents would vote to rejoin the EU in a second membership referendum.

This figure marks a four-point increase compared to the previous poll, conducted between July 14-17. Meanwhile, support for staying outside the bloc decreased by three points to 38 percent.

Deltapoll reports that this is the highest level of support for rejoining the EU recorded since the establishment of their tracker poll in September 2018.

Expectations for Rejoining

During an interview with Andrew Marr, Sir Tony was asked about the realistic possibility of the UK rejoining the EU, or joining the customs union or Single Market.

He responded, “Well, I believe at some point a future generation will take Britain back into Europe, and, you know, you just have to look at what’s happened.”

Sir Tony, a prominent pro-Remain campaigner, referred to Brexit as “a constant sadness” to him.

Peter Bone, a leading Conservative Brexiteer, argued that more than 17 million people disagreed with Sir Tony during the EU referendum in 2016, and that his comments demonstrated a detachment from the British public.

“Since then, we have ended the free movement of people, stopped paying billions of pounds to the EU, and have gained control over our own laws,” Mr. Bone stated.

“On what possible basis does Tony Blair believe we would want to sign up for less control over our laws and return to a system where anyone from the EU can come to this country?”

“I think he is out of touch with the British people.”

Labour’s Stance on Brexit

Sir Tony Blair’s remarks may pose challenges for Sir Keir Starmer, as the Labour leader has repeatedly affirmed that a Labour government would not reverse Brexit.

Back in May of this year, Sir Keir stated that “Britain’s future is outside the EU,” while ruling out membership in the Single Market or customs union. He asserted that such debates “belong in the past.”

Sir Keir has expressed that a Labour government would aim to “improve” the current Brexit agreement with Brussels in order to “make Brexit work.”

However, Conservative MPs argue that Sir Keir’s plan to renegotiate with Brussels demonstrates an untrustworthiness on Brexit and a hidden agenda to take the UK back into the EU clandestinely.
