Sir Cliff Richard explains the reason behind Olivia Newton-John’s collaboration on his latest record

The legendary 82-year-old singer, Sir Cliff Richard, recently announced the upcoming release of his orchestral album, titled “Cliff With Strings – My Kinda Life.” This album is a celebration of his remarkable 65-year career in the music industry. It features a special duet with the late Dame Olivia Newton-John, a dear friend of Sir Cliff who had an incredible music career and was well-known for her role as Sandy in the iconic film “Grease.” Sadly, Dame Olivia passed away last year at the age of 73.

During an interview with ITV’s Loose Women, Sir Cliff shared the story behind the duet. He revealed that Olivia had called him and explained that she was working on a movie, but her co-star didn’t sing. To Sir Cliff’s delight, she asked him to come and sing the duet with her. Despite not having heard the track beforehand, Sir Cliff agreed and they recorded the song in an engineer’s garage, occasionally pausing when a truck passed by. Sir Cliff described their duet as one of his best, as their voices blended perfectly together, with the male and female tones complementing each other’s.

“Cliff With Strings – My Kinda Life” is a compilation album that includes Sir Cliff’s biggest hits and favorite tracks. The orchestral arrangements for the album were done by composer Chris Walden. One of the featured tracks is from Sir Cliff’s performance of “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” at his Countdown Concert, marking the turn of the millennium.

In addition to his new album, Sir Cliff will also be releasing a memoir in October called “A Head Full of Music: The Soundtrack To My Life.” This memoir will touch upon one of his earliest inspirations, Elvis Presley. Sir Cliff reminisced about the first time he heard Elvis, as a group of schoolboys walking around in Waltham Cross. They came across a car with the windows open, playing Elvis’ music. The mystery of the singer was solved by a friend who had listened to the American Forces network from Germany and identified the song as “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis Presley. This encounter sparked Sir Cliff’s determination to pursue a career in music.

Reflecting on his long and successful journey in the music industry, Sir Cliff emphasized the role of hard work and seizing opportunities. He acknowledged the element of luck that comes to everyone in the industry but highlighted the importance of actively pursuing and seizing those moments. Luck may come, but it’s up to individuals to grasp it and make the most of it.

During the interview, Sir Cliff also showed off his dance moves and shared his nonchalant outlook towards aging. He stated, “I will one day die, but I haven’t decided when.”

“Cliff With Strings – My Kinda Life” will be available digitally and on CD from November 3, with the vinyl release set for November 24. Fans can tune in to ITV’s Loose Women weekdays at 12.30pm to catch the latest updates.
