It’s concerning when road signs become illegible while driving. During this time of year, it’s evident how many road signs are almost hidden by foliage along the country’s roads, except for motorways. Many of these signs are unreadable, like “laney” instead of “Castleblaney” and “ford” instead of “Sandy-ford.” When these signs are installed, presumably in the winter when hedges are bare, the authorities should consider that come summer, motorists will struggle to understand their meaning.

Most people have no choice but to rely on the private rental sector, paying exorbitant rents that strain their ability to afford basic necessities. With the current rental costs, almost everyone living in this type of accommodation is experiencing financial burdens. This exposes individuals to eviction, homelessness, and housing insecurity, resulting in negative outcomes such as poor health and educational achievement, as well as the sexual exploitation of women. The pressing question is why the Government, with its surplus of funds, hasn’t developed a cohesive plan to build affordable and social housing.

In the same way that we have a Garda Ombudsman to investigate police conduct, it’s time we had a Judicial Ombudsman to scrutinize judges when they hand down inadequate sentences for serious crimes. These judges are well-known, as their names often appear in the news, yet they face no consequences. The justice system relies on all components working together, and if one component fails, the system breaks down. While the police are easily investigated when things go wrong, the judiciary is rarely challenged by the media or anyone else.
