On her first vault, the Biles II, also known as the Yurchenko double pike, Simone Biles stumbled and scored 14.433. This error gave hope to her competitors.

Despite the mistake, Biles regained her composure and scored an impressive 14.666 on her second vault, resulting in an average score of 14.549.

Biles held the first-place position until Rebeca Andrade, the defending champion, surpassed her score with a total of 14.750.

Andrade celebrated her victory with a dance and her country’s flag, while Yeo Seo-jeong of South Korea took bronze.

In the uneven bars event, Biles finished fifth, which has historically been her least successful apparatus.

Biles scored 14.200, while China’s Qiu Qiyuan won the gold with a score of 15.100. Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour took silver, and the USA’s Shilese Jones won bronze.

At the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, Biles made history by being the first woman to successfully perform the Yurchenko double pike vault in an international competition. This skill is now named after her. Learn more here.

The Yurchenko double pike vault, historically performed only by men, involves a roundoff onto the springboard, followed by a back handspring onto the vaulting table, and ending with a piked double backflip into the air before landing.

By surpassing Vitaly Scherbo’s record, Simone Biles now holds a total of 28 career medals (21 gold, four silver, three bronze) at the world championships.

In addition to her individual achievements, Biles helped the US win the women’s team gold medal and narrowly missed a third gold in Belgium. She will compete in the balance beam and floor exercise finals on Sunday.
