Simone Biles and the Unprecedented Achievements of the US Women’s Team: Breaking Records in Style

Simone Biles and her teammates achieved an incredible victory at the gymnastics world championships, setting a record for both the US women’s team and Biles herself. Despite their imperfections, the US women earned a historic seventh consecutive team title. Biles also secured her 33rd major championship medal, making her the most decorated female gymnast in history. This victory is especially significant as it took place in Antwerp, the Belgian port city where Biles first gained international recognition 10 years ago by winning her first world title as a 16-year-old prodigy.

Biles, along with her teammates Shilese Jones, Skye Blakely, Joscelyn Roberson, and Leanne Wong, collectively scored 167.729 points to narrowly defeat Brazil and France for the gold medal. The US team won by a margin of 2.199 points, which was closer than anticipated after their dominant performance in the qualifying round where they finished over five points ahead of the rest of the field. Despite some mistakes, Biles expressed pride in her team’s perseverance and determination. “We had some mistakes here and there, but just keep going, keep relying on our training,” Biles said. “But I think this team that we have brought this year has the most great courage and fight.”

This victory for the US women marks their continuous reign in the team event at every world championship with a team competition since 2011. Their win in Antwerp surpasses the Chinese men’s record for the longest streak of consecutive team titles. Biles now has a staggering 26 world championship medals, 20 of which are gold, in addition to her seven Olympic medals, including the Olympic title she won in 2016. Her combined total of 33 medals from these two prestigious events exceeds the record previously held by Larisa Latynina from the Soviet Union. This competition also marks Biles’ return to international competition after a two-year break. With an overall score of 58.732 points, Biles is the favorite to secure her sixth all-around title on Friday, although she will face tough competition from Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, the reigning world all-around champion. The event finals are scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday.
