Sidney Powell Joins Effort for Expedited Trial in Georgia Election Case

Sidney Powell, a former attorney for Donald Trump, has requested a speedy trial in the Georgia election interference case. This request comes after co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro made a similar request and had his trial date set for October 23. However, the judge has yet to approve Powell’s request, which was filed on Friday. Both Powell and Chesebro are accused of violating Georgia’s racketeering act by allegedly participating in a plot to assemble “alternative” electors.

It’s important to note that the October trial date only applies to Chesebro, as Trump has stated in court documents that he does not wish to join the group seeking a speedy trial. All defendants involved in the case are expected to receive a significant amount of evidentiary materials during the discovery process. Their attorneys have been instructed to provide USB drives capable of holding at least two terabytes of data by September 5, and they will need to review this material before the trial.

In an unexpected turn of events, Chesebro’s request for a speedy trial surprised Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who had previously aimed to try all 19 defendants in early 2024. However, in response to Chesebro’s request, Willis stated that her office is prepared to bring all 19 defendants to trial as early as October.

Legal expert Kay Levine believes that Chesebro’s request was an attempt to test Willis’ determination, and her response was a direct challenge in return. Additionally, separating themselves from Trump, who is the most prominent defendant, may benefit Powell and Chesebro. Powell gained attention during the aftermath of the 2020 election by assisting Trump in promoting allegations of voter fraud, comparing one of her lawsuits to a mythical sea monster called the “Kraken.” However, her lawsuit did not succeed in reversing President Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

In conclusion, the Georgia election interference case continues to unfold with various requests for speedy trials while defendants prepare for the upcoming legal proceedings.
